What Are CEREC Veneers?

Facts about CEREC veneers

Veneers are used to treat cosmetic flaws such as gaps and chips. Veneers can also be placed over discolored teeth to make the teeth look white again. Patients who choose to get traditional veneers need to make at least two appointments with the dentist. These patients are fitted with temporary veneers during the first appointment and get the permanent veneers during the second appointment. Those who get CEREC veneers only need a single appointment and do not have to wear temporary veneers.

The procedure

The CEREC veneer procedure begins with a consultation. Then, the dentist takes a three-dimensional image of the teeth that require veneers. The three-dimensional images are sent to a computer where the dentist makes a model. The dentist also chooses the color of the veneers during this process. Then, the model goes to a milling machine, and the veneers are fabricated out of a block of porcelain.

The dentist then prepares the teeth for the veneers. After etching some of the enamel, the dentist bonds the veneers to the teeth. The veneers are polished, so they match the existing teeth. Patients are sent home once the veneers are fitted and polished.

How long do CEREC veneers last?

Like other dental restorations, veneers are not permanent. The restorations can fail and require replacement after a period of time. However, CEREC veneers can last for up to 30 years and typically last at least 10 years. People can make the veneers last longer by avoiding biting into hard objects such as ice. People also should not chew gum or other sticky foods. Sticky foods can cause the material to wear down, making the veneers more susceptible to staining.

Also, proper oral hygiene is needed for the veneers to last. Veneers are brushed and flossed like normal teeth. Patients also need to go to the dentist two times a year to have the teeth and veneers professionally cleaned. During the visit, the dentist will examine the veneers to ensure they are in good shape.
