What to Expect From Crown Placement for a Dental Restoration

Dental Restorations Brevard, NC

Individuals that have weak or damaged teeth might need to have a dental restoration placed. Dental restorations often include crowns, which are popular cap-like pieces that rehabilitate teeth that are in bad shape. A discolored tooth might also benefit from this dental restoration. Keep reading to find out more about what to expect from having this done and how it will feel.

Choosing a type of crown

There are a few different kinds of crowns that patients might choose from when requiring a dental restoration. These might include resin, ceramic, stainless steel or porcelain. For a cosmetic crown or a natural look, a patient might choose ceramic or porcelain. Each one has its own different pros and cons. This is why the dentist should address the personal situation of each patient to determine which kind might be right.

For example, a porcelain crown might be better for the front teeth that do not get as much chewing pressure. These might tend to look a bit more natural. On the other hand, the back teeth take much more pressure when the patient is chewing. At the same time, these teeth are not as visible, which means that a stronger, less attractive dental restoration might be used in this area.

The procedure used to place a dental restoration

It might take the patient two dental visits to have a dental crown placed on the teeth. During the first appointment, the dentist might examine the teeth to see if a crown can be supported. Then the tooth will be filed down to help prepare it to have the crown placed. If the tooth has severe damage to it, then it might need to have a filling so it will be large enough to support the crown.

Once the tooth has been either filled or filed down to the correct shape, the dentist will take impressions. The surrounding teeth will also have impressions taken. Then, these can be sent to a dental lab so that the permanent dental restoration can be made. At the end of the visit, the patient might have a temporary crown to protect it.

This will remain on until the permanent crown can be placed. The second visit happens once the permanent crown is complete. The dentist will take the temporary crown off of the patient’s teeth. With a dental adhesive, the permanent crown can be fastened into place. This dental restoration is designed to stay on for many years to come.

Choosing the right dental restoration

After a crown has been placed, it might take a bit of time to get used to it. It could feel strange until the mouth becomes accustomed to it. However, it will eventually function and feel like a natural tooth.

If you have questions about this kind of dental restoration, it is a good idea to talk to a dentist. Make a consultation appointment to determine if you are a good candidate for this dental restoration.
