Dentures and Partial Dentures

Will My Partial Dentures Match My Natural Teeth?

Dentures are artificial replacements for one or more of your natural teeth and gums. Partial dentures are used when a number of natural teeth are still present. If a disease, poor oral health or an accident has left you with a few healthy teeth, your dentist may suggest partial dentures to replace your lost teeth. These devices contain replacement teeth that you can easily put in or take out of your mouth.

Partial dentures

Dentures are custom-crafted to suit a patient. An increasing number of people are choosing dentures because these devices look like natural teeth. Modern technologies and materials have made partial dentures more natural-looking and the experience of wearing them more comfortable than ever.

Materials

Removable partial dentures are made of gum-colored bases that help hold the artificial teeth. This device may have a metal framework and clasps that connect to the natural teeth, or they can have other, more natural-looking connectors. Sometimes, partial dentures are made to attach to the adjoining teeth via devices referred to as precision attachments. The artificial teeth and gum are colored so the partial dentures match a patient’s natural teeth and gums.

The metal clasps are usually designed to be inconspicuous. But the clasps can be visible when a person talks, depending on their position. A patient may also choose clips made from a tooth-colored material. This will help make them less noticeable.

Denture process

During the denture process, a dentist and patient can decide the final look of the denture. The process usually takes a few weeks and multiple appointments. At the beginning of the process, a dentist will create wax forms, models and plastic patterns in the exact position and shape of the partial denture that will be made. A patient will be required to try on this model several times.

A dentist will assess the shape, color and fit of the denture prior to the final denture being cast. At this stage, the patient and dentist will be able to see what the denture looks like. This is a good opportunity for a patient to discuss the appearance of the denture with the dentist. Adjustments can be made so a patient is happy with the results.

Color and shade selection

Dentists and their teams are highly trained in color and shade matching. If a patient has a new denture, it can be matched to the remaining natural teeth. However, a patient who has an existing partial denture may be advised to have a new one made because the cost of making a new denture would be about the same as recoloring the old denture.

Talk to your dentist

Partial dentures can provide you with an attractive substitute for your natural teeth. These devices will help improve your smile. Dentures are custom-made to suit you, which usually makes them natural-looking. Partial dentures can be made using materials or components that match your natural teeth, or you can decide to have them color-matched to your remaining teeth. If you have any questions about partial dentures, talk to your dentist.
